Gender is a concept that differentiates and attributes feminine and masculine characteristics to women and men. It is a social construction built upon the biological/ physical sexual difference. Social gaps between men and women are created, repeated, and anchored through social circumstances – staring from birth and all along life.
These categorisations confirm and justify the general views and interpretations of what women and men can and should do in a society. Individual and collective biases confirm one another and finally establish structural and tacit frameworks of gender-related behaviours.
We seek to understand the mental construct between genders that is a factor of projection and misunderstanding between women and men. Socio-politically, this creates a disequilibrium between the two halves of humankind. The world over, women seem disadvantaged in many ways (access to posts, pay, recognition). But if one half is hindered, then the whole is restrained in its evolution.
This seminar explains the gender phenomenon and how de-constructing it may enable more equality and healthy complementarity, and thus more peace in societies.
